Things to know when buying USB drives

We are in the age of internet dispensation and cloud storage appears to be the fashion, but flash drive storage will not go away, at least because you can save your items in it and carry it at home as a physical storage of your valuable documents. Many people consider different things when purchasing USB and flash drives: Almost everyone now understand that pricing varies with the size, but prize is now also determined by some other things as well. Printed USB flash drives that bear names of the owner or branded USB drives or the commonly referred to as custom USB drives are likely to be more costly than plain USB drives because they offer additional benefits. For instance, custom USB drives and branded USB drives can be used for marketing purposes while personalized USB sticks as gifts.

Below are some things you should know when buying flash drives, whether customized or not.

1. Similar features might confuse you: Although same flash drives might have similar features on the label, one might cost more than the other because of the quality of components, meaning it will perform faster. Just consider the most important features, for instance the speed. The speed of custom USB drives or branded USB drives is determined by the USB port and flash drive components, namely the type of flash memory and controller. A USB 3.0 transfers data at about 100 MB/S but the computer must support these features too, while a USB 2.0 transfers at 15 MB/S. The best printed USB flash drives have advanced controllers and solid state drives (SSD) memory quality. Of course, you might compromise on quality when buying inexpensive personalized USB sticks for gifts or printed USB flash drives for product and service promotion.

2. Don't confuse size with performance: The same way a big sized phone does not necessary translate to a better performing phone, a smaller sized one does not mean so either. The same is for USB drives. However, drives are becoming smaller by day. However, smaller drives happen to be more portable, and convenient in use and may be applicable when buying USB drives for gift. In most cases, those drives that are more powerful are larger.

3. Limited lifespan: Most drives have a write cycle of 3, 000 to 5, 000 times, which could mean about four years of usage. Many will not go that far. However, the connector might be damaged as you insert and eject the drive. If you are using a flash drive as a portable PC, you could exhaust those cycles faster. Of course it can be very frustrating if the flash damages permanently while it is carrying sensitive data, therefore, always consider backing up data in a separate storage.

4. When to go for MicroUSB Ports: Those that have both the microUSB and normal size USB are better because you can transfer documents to Android and other phones. Some phones support the USB OTG (On-The-Go), which means they can read external flash drives. Do not buy a phone that has a microUSB port if it does not support OTG when you actually want to use OTG.

5. Rugged & secure flash drives: Rugged custom USB drives and branded USB drives are better because they do not get damaged after they are thrown in the wash together with pants. Secure flash drives are secure from hackers or those intending to steal your data. This is very important if considering keeping information and data in the flash drive.
